Sightseeing around Almancil
The church of Sao Lourenço de Matos is situated on a hill. It owes its name to Laurentius (3rd century), who’s life was ended on a funeral pile because he gave the money meant for the construction of the church to the poor. In the 17th century the chapel was covered with tiles (azulejos). Together with the marbel alter and the wood carving you should visit this church.

On 18 km. from the urbanisations you will find the centre of the capital city of the Algarve: Faro, with its beautiful shopping centres. There are a lot of cafés and restaurants as well.

The shops are modern and they can be compared with the shops you are used in UK or Ireland. Most of them are opened from 09.00 until 13.00 hour and after the ‘siesta’  from 15.00 until 19.00 hour (in the summer until 20.00 hour). Between the centre of the city and the airport of Faro a mall, called Forum Algarve, has been constructed in the year 2001.

The town hall of the municipality where our urbanisations are situated in is the centre of Loulé (on 15 km from the villa’s). This is a city with many shops as well.  However, it is less cosy than in Faro. A lot of Portuguese people do their shopping in Loulé.

Every Saturday morning there is a very interesting market in the streets next to the covered municipal market. Especially fish, vegetables, fruits and olives are sold then. The covered market itself is open on every day except for the Sunday.

On every 1st and 4th Sunday morning of the month there is a market in the centre of Almancil. Even though you can buy vegetables as well, a lot of Portuguese sell textiles, potteries and so on. A similar market is in Quarteira on every Wednesday morning.

The urbanisations around Vale do Garrão and Varandas do Lago (such as Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Dunas Douradas) are set up low buildings. A “Benidorm-like” boulevard you can find in Quarteira (10 km. distance from the villas). Albufeira (on 30 km.) is a rather big tourist centre.

In Villamoura (on 15 km. distance from the villas ) – drive along the dual carriage way (avenida) through Quarteira – has a very nice Marina. There are very cosy restaurants on the terraces around the harbour.

It is just a stroll to the sandy (Atlantic) beach (10 minutes, app.. 1 km. from all the villa’s except for villa Esperanza). You can get there trough the Pine wood forest. or by the acces road opposite the Ria Park hotel.

On the right hand side you will find restaurant Julias. Its terrace is constructed on the first red rocks  of the Algarve: only further to the west you will find more of those rocks.

The prices in cafés and restaurants are generally lower than in UK and Ireland. Within a circle of 8  kilometres around Vale do Garrão and Varandas do Lago you will find over 50 restaurants (among them Italian, Swiss, Mexican, Chinese, Tandoori, etc. speciality restaurants).
